What is
hypnosis?
Although the word Hypnosis has its source from hypnos, the Ancient Greek word
for sleep, it is far from that. In fact, hypnosis is a state of heightened
awareness. The conscious mind's critical factors are bypassed allowing the
unconscious mind to establish selective thinking.
Your conscious mind is full of your learned behaviour, beliefs and values, many
of which may not be valid any more and may be causing you problems. By
bypassing these blockages we can work together to allow your unconscious mind,
your natural mind and untainted mind, to make the decisions which will benefit
you in many ways.

Will I be unconscious?
No. You will be aware of all sounds around you at all times. Sometimes I will
want you to respond to my questions and your mind will need to be fully aware
to do that.

Will I remember everything that happened in trance?
In most cases, yes you will. However, for some of my clients, and with certain
therapeutic methods I may use, it may be beneficial for you not to remember
certain parts of the trance experience. I will always tell you if I plan to do
this type of work with you so that you can make an informed choice.

Can I be hypnotized?
Absolutely. You may not realise it but you have been hypnotised many times
already. Have you ever been entranced by music, art, film, or dance? Have you
ever been so engrossed in a film, a book or the TV? In all these cases you were
in a state of trance. And that’s hypnosis.

What does it feel like?
Most clients report that hypnosis feels like daydreaming or the short time
just before you fall asleep. Hypnosis is deeply relaxing and clients tend to
leave the session feeling lighter in mind, body and spirit.

Does the hypnotist control me?
No. The hypnotist guides you. If at any time you want to emerge from hypnosis
for any reason you will instantly, naturally, open your eyes and become fully
alert. No one can keep you in hypnosis against your will.

Isn’t all hypnosis self-hypnosis?
Many hypnotherapists, myself included, believe this to be true. A good
hypnotherapist will act as the road signs on your map; you know where you want
to go but are unsure of the best direction to take. Your hypnotherapist will
help you.

How do hypnotherapy sessions proceed?
I will initially send you some forms or questionaires relevent to your case
which I will ask you to complete and return to me before your first session.
This enables me to produce an initial treatment plan for you.
On your first visit I will explain hypnosis and answer any questions you may
have. We will discuss your goals or issues and may use non-hypnotic
therapies such as CBT or NLP to gain a fuller understanding of the issues at
hand. Usually in the second half of your session I will guide you into a state
of deep relaxation and mental alertness in which you will be fully aware of
everything going on around you. I use various techniques to clarify the
underlying cause of your problem and additional techniques resolve them. Then
you are emerged, fully refreshed. To complete the session I will review the
session with you and agree with you the best way to proceed.

How many sessions will it take?
This really depends on the issues involved. I will be able to tell you how many
sessions we will plan before your first session. Often, progress is so good
that fewer sessions are needed yet, at other times, unexpected issues arise and
further sessions are required.
